In 1976 Thomas Hanna announced a new field and called it Somatics. He did not invent the term. He went backward, past English and past Latin, into Greek, looking for a word older than the division between mind and body he was trying to undo. He found soma: the living body, the body as you feel it from inside rather than the object a doctor examines. He was a philosopher, so he defined it with care, thinking through exactly what the word had to mean before he asked it to carry a whole field.
